Friday, February 8th, was a night to remember for six Passaic Valley students who attended the Tim Tebow sponsored Night to Shine event held at St. Ann's Church in Woodland Park. Night to Shine is a nationwide event celebrated at over 600 different churches around the world. The goal of the event is to create the ultimate prom for special needs teens and adults, treating them like prom kings and queens.
Night to Shine has been providing an unforgettable prom night experience for the past five years. Each year, approximately 100,000 guests are honored and served by the support of 200,000 volunteers. According to the foundation website, Tim Tebow recognizes the event as his "favorite night of the year".
The Passaic Valley Night to Shine was attended by 93 guests, the youngest was 14 years old and the oldest was 70. About 200 hundred volunteers helped set up the event and kept the night in full swing.
"My favorite part was when all the boys and girls were crowned king and queen," remarked volunteer Jessica Gaita '19. "I am 100% volunteering next year. I had an amazing time and made so many incredible memories!"
Flowers, food, and favors were all donated by local businesses. The night began at 7 pm and ended at 9:30 pm. Prior to the start, girls were invited to get their makeup and hair done by professional artists. The boys were also invited to have their hair styled and their shoes shined.
The special guests arrived in limos or party buses. Upon arrival, they had their coats checked and were given corsages and boutonnieres. They then had their picture taken, which was framed as a keepsake by the end of the night. After that, they walked the red carpet and had more pictures taken while the song "Our Night to Shine" by Rascal Flatts played. The red carpet was a memorable moment because guests were cheered on like celebrities. From there, they were escorted to their tables and the priest shared a prayer. Each table was then served delicious food. After dinner, the dance floor opened to all. A photobooth and short limo rides were also available throughout the night. By the end of the night, each guest is crowned king and queen by a special Tim Tebow video message.
“It gives you chills, it’s a great night!” remarked Ms. Joann Fakhoury. Many of the guests said they wished everyday could be that much fun and amazing. Passaic Valley students are encouraged to volunteer for next year's Night to Shine event.
