Passaic Valley's Marching Band won first place in the State Championship for the first time in about 35 years on November 3rd. Passaic Valley scored higher than seven other schools in the Group I A division of the competition with a score of 87.665.
Mr. DeLuccia has been the Marching Band director for 14 seasons. Mr. DeLuccia knew there was a good chance to at least finish in the top three. “I knew our kids had heart and that we had a shot at it,” DeLuccia said. He was initially shocked at the results, because of how long it has been since they last won. However, this quickly transitioned to elation as the team celebrated their accomplishment.
The Marching Band's performance is all the more impressive given that the team includes several new members and even some 7th and 8th graders. According to Mr. DeLuccia, their tremendous heart and dedication outshone their relative inexperience. “I knew it was going to be tough, but I knew our kids had heart,'' he added.
Winning first place meant so much not only for the Marching Band but for Passaic Valley as a school. “It means a whole lot to see where these students started with the show," said Mr. DeLuccia. "They earned every bit of the win and for that they should be really proud.”
