Senior Colby Selitto Accepted to Ohio State Scholars and Clemson University Choice Programs
15 March 2021
Senior Colby Selitto has been accepted into two prestigious programs: Ohio State Scholars and Clemson University Choice. These acceptances reflect his dedication to both academics and athletics at Passaic Valley.
Currently captain of the Passaic Valley Wrestling Team, member of the Passaic Valley Cross Country Team, and among the top ten in the Class of 2021, Selitto has been an athlete since elementary school. Selitto has been a varsity wrestler since his freshman year. He is also an ambassador for the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA), an elite group of 30 student-athletes from all over New Jersey, serving as a voice for the wrestling community.
Mr. Joseph Wassel, Math Teacher and Varsity Wrestling Coach, has been coaching Colby since he was a freshman. "Colby is a great student-athlete who has taken great strides as a leader in both academics, athletics, and in the community. I was an assistant coach when Colby came in as a freshman and it's been a pleasure to watch him grow and strive for greatness in his future," stated Mr. Wassel. "He has worked extremely hard in his studies and in his training as an athlete and that sort of work ethic is something that is hard to come by nowadays."
Former wrestling coach and Supervisor of Athletics, Health/PE, and Activities Mr. Joseph Benvenuti, who has known Selitto since he was a Junior Hornet, is extremely proud of all Selitto has been able to accomplish. “I have always known him to be an extremely hard worker and a person of the highest character. I could tell at an early age this young man would certainly become a leader for our wrestling program and our Passaic Valley school community as well,” stated Mr. Benvenuti. “I have enjoyed watching Colby evolve from a quiet kid that was unsure of himself into a confident leader that trusts his work ethic and believes in himself.”
Colby plans to major in biomedical engineering following the pre-med track in hopes of becoming an orthopedic surgeon. These programs will allow him to work closely with other student-athletes with similar aspirations. “Passaic Valley has prepared me for these next steps by providing me with great teachers, coaches and mentors to help me and motivate me through this process. I have also been surrounded by a network of similarly driven peers who bring out the best in me,” stated Selitto. “I owe a lot of my success to the people who have stood by my side throughout my years in PVHS. I have no doubt that the universities I am deciding between will also provide me with a similar network of peers. I believe that having the right people beside you can make all the difference in your success.”
The Ohio State University Honors Program and the Ohio State Scholars Program are specialized programs for academically high achieving students seeking active participation within stimulating communities at Ohio State. The Ohio State Scholars Program offers undergraduate students the chance to live and learn with other students who share similar interests. Each of the scholars programs is centered around a theme or area of study that centralizes learning communities of students with the same or similar interests and career goals.
The Clemson RISE program is a first-year transition program that provides first-year STEM students with both housing and educational benefits. Some of these benefits include academic support through in-hall tutoring services, access to grouped courses with other RISE students, and professional development through faculty-sponsored programs and mentoring.
Though Colby has not yet decided where he will be attending school next year, he is grateful for the opportunities he's been presented.
