Passaic Valley Baseball travelled to Disney World in Orlando, Florida, which they have done every couple of years since Varisty Coach John Mazzo started coaching at PV. The team went there to get some more work in and enjoy themselves, establishing much needed comradery on the diamond.
“The trip is great for kids, not only does it give them some more work on the field that we don’t always get in the early part of the season due to the weather," Mr. Mazzo said. "It builds team chemistry because you're seeing [your teammates] 24/7 for a week straight.”
The team played five games while down in Florida. The first two were scrimmages that the team spilt. The Varsity Team opened up the season on the winning side with senior Jason Langevin pitching a shutout against Dublin Jerome High School from Ohio.
Then the Hornets played Fenwick, a private high school from the Chicago area, in which the Hornets lost a tough game 4-0.
Finally, the Hornets wrapped up the Florida schedule against Bullit East High School, a team out of Kentucky who the Hornets have played a few times while in Florida over the years. They lost this year's meeting 12-1, but the score doesn’t really reflect the way the game was played as the Hornets only trailed Bullit East 5-1 after the fifth inning.
“ I think all of our guys really impressed me in Florida,” commented Mazzo. The Hornets had a very nice time in Florida, and not just in the field. “It was great!" Senior Captain AJ Ward said. "We got some great work in down there and had a chance to bond. It was all an a-round great time.”
The Hornets have high expectations this year, “We have an team with experience," Ward added. "I think we can compete not just for counties but for states as well."
