The wrestling team has had a phenomenal 2016-2017 postseason. After their last match as a team, the athletes moved on to compete at the District Tournament to earn a spot for Regions and then for the State Tournament. Nick Denora '17 medalled in States, earning 8th place overall.
For this year’s NJ High School District wrestling tournament, Passaic Valley’s was awarded the honor of hosting in the Griswold Gym for the first time in 12 years.
It has always been one of the team’s goals to be District Champs as a whole. The wrestlers had a great chance to win this tournament for the 3rd season in a row. Head coach Joseph Benvenuti believes that with the leadership of the team’s two captains, Denora and Kenny Kerwin '17, and the coaching staff’s support they can accomplish anything.
Passaic Valley’s Athletic Director, Mr. Rob Carcich deserves a huge shout out, and thank you for putting so much time and effort into making sure the Griswold Gymnasium was set up with class. Parents, alumni, and PV Wrestling fans had a great deal of positive feedback for how well the tournament ran and how great the gym looked on this day. Mr. Carcich never fails to show tons of PV Pride!
At this year’s District Tournament, the Hornets placed 4th, but sent six talented athletes on to to the first round of Regions: Denora, Kerwin, Tom Marretta '18, Greg Sabbak '18, Jeremy Geletta '18, and Yousef Karmi '18. After the first round of Regions, Denora, Kerwin, Sabbak, Marretta, and Geletta moved on to the second round.
After Regions as a whole, Denora and Kerwin were both successful and moved on to represent Passaic Valley at the States Tournament in Atlantic City. They competed for state titles from Friday, March 3rd to Sunday, March 5th.
Congratulations to Nick Denora on placing 8th in the state and for winning his first state medal.
