Mr. MichaelO' Brien was hired as a new Social Studies/Special Education teacher for the 2019-2020 school year. He teaches US History in both co-teaching and traditional capacities.
This marks O'Brien's first job in his new career track. "I was employed as an instructional aid last year," said Mr. O'Brien. "And prior to that I was student teaching."
Mr. O' Brien attended Montclair University, receiving his Bachelor's Degree and Teaching Certificate last spring. "I just graduated this past May," he stated. "I did my student teaching at Grover Cleveland Middle School in West Caldwell and Montclair High School." Mr. O'Brien is currently progressing towards his Graduate Degree from the Rutgers Graduate School of Education.
Mr. O'Brien's vision for his student goes far beyond recalling important dates and identifying major figures throughout history. "My main goal and objective for my students is I want them to be informed and engaged citizens of the United States," he said. "So what that actually means is just being aware of what's going on around them."
Of course, in order to become functioning and responsible citizens, they must learn from the mistakes, triumphs, and tragedies of the past. It is through this framework that Mr. O'Brien delivers his material and connects it to the present.
